“I Am Not Going to Change 400 Years in Four”

A film by Kristi Jacobson & Angela Tucker | 2020

When Satana Deberry took the oath of office as district attorney of Durham County, North Carolina on January 1, 2019, it was a momentous occasion, for her and for the city of Durham. An attorney and housing advocate, Deberry had not been on the path towards elected office until she was approached by members of her community to run for office on a platform pushing for radical change and reform. Now, she faces the complicated realities of seeking to reform a criminal justice system that is “doing exactly what it was set up to do, and has been doing this for 400 hundred years”. Her story is at once inspiring and empowering -- and also a call to action.

Deberry stars in a new short film, "I Am Not Going to Change 400 Years in Four", directed by Angela Tucker and Kristi Jacobson, produced by Chicken and Egg Pictures, and proudly presented by Mother Jones.

#TheElectionEffect: Hebh

A film by Kristi Jacobson | 2017

#TheElectionEffect, a five-part documentary series that showcases life for the next generation of voters. The series looks at seven students from an array of backgrounds and political beliefs across the nation -- and documents the effect of political rhetoric on each of them.

I was thrilled to participate in this series that looks to youth as leaders of today. Check out the Webby Award nominated episode I directed, "Hebh", which is about a young Muslim girl in NYC realizing the power of her voice during a time when anti-Muslim hostility is at an all-time high.

Produced by Oscar Award-winning production house Shine Global and Paramount Network, #TheElectionEffect was nominated for Best Documentary Series 2018 Award by the International Academy of Web Television

BEE LOVE

A film by Kristi Jacobson | 2016

Bee Love, was one of the five films commissioned and selected to screen at the TEDWomen Conference on October 26, 2016. This film tells the story of an unlikely company that set its sights on reversing the recidivism statistics by employing the formerly incarcerated and training them to become beekeepers in Chicago’s notorious West Side. We had an amazing experience meeting Brenda Palms-Barber, the founder of Sweet Beginnings, Patricia Jackson and the whole team - and capturing their uplifting and inspiring stories.
